Online Seminar „Wealth, Elites, and Social Justice”
As a result of the collaboration between CELA (Centro de Estudios Latinoamericanos) of the University of Kassel, CALAS (Maria Sibylla Merian Center for Advanced Latin American Studies), and CLACSO (Consejo Latinoamericano de Ciencias Sociales), the seminar “Wealth, Elites and Social Justice” will be held online between July and December 2022. It is an internationally recognized diploma course with postgraduate accreditation by CLACSO.
The seminar is divided into five thematic modules in which 21 international experts will present the main concepts, debates, approaches, and methodologies that allow us to understand and explain the complexity of wealth in Latin America. Wealth is considered a key aspect of understanding the persistent inequalities in Latin America. The following topics will be addressed: a) the structural, institutional, and political factors associated with the production, concentration, and accumulation of wealth; b) the representation of the respective actors associated with wealth in Latin America and their respective roles in politics, the economy, and society; c) various social and cultural aspects associated with its reproduction; and d) other factors to consider when looking at wealth and inequalities from a social justice perspective.
