Welcome to the homepage of our department. Our team researches and teaches various topics of international relations. In particular, we are concerned with political, economic, ecologic and social change as well as the dynamics between Global North and Global South.

The department investigates these topics with a special focus on Latin America.

Social Inequalities

Analysis of different (inter-)national dimensions of inequality in labor, social and environmental regimes, wealth research, and democracy in an international perspective.

Consideration of political, social, ecological and economic processes in countries of the Global South; UN Sustainable Development Goals today and tomorrow.

Natural Resources Politics & Extractivism

Analysis of political, economic, and social processes in societies dependent on raw material exports as well as their behavior within the international system.

Sustainable Development & Socio-Ecological Transformation

Studies on the consequences of socio-ecological crises and on the conditions, opportunities and risks of addressing them in a North-South context.

Projects

The department is involved in the following research projects and collaborative research centre:

CALAS

As a Center for Advanced Latin American Studies, CALAS seeks to foment research of interest in the social sciences and humanities in Latin America, applying historical, scientific and systematic approaches and employing transdisciplinary and transregional dialogue.

CELA

As an interdisciplinary research center, the Centro de Estudios Latinoamericanos pools research on Latin America at the University of Kassel and organizes as well as supports international cooperations, collaborations and various research projects.

CLACSO

The Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO) is an international non-governmental institution with associative status at UNESCO, created in 1967. It currently brings together 736 research and postgraduate centers in the field of social sciences and humanities in 51 countries in Latin America and other continents.
